You are not alone.

Your baby has died - a miscarriage, a stillbirth, a newborn death. Such a sudden, unexpected event is a heartbreaking experience for parents.

How you may be feeling

It is normal to have a variety of feelings - emptiness, loneliness, self-pity, guilt, anger, depression and despair. You are not sick or crazy or weak to have these feelings. Grief that troubles and lingers for weeks or months is more the rule than the exception.

A new wave of grief can be triggered by common things in life such as seeing a pregnant woman on television, a birth announcement or baby shower invitation arriving in the mail, or the sound of a baby crying. As one father expressed it, "You're always just a split second away from a reminder of your loss."

Your friends and members of your family may become impatient with you when you don’t get back to normal as soon as they think you should. You may find yourself feeling very alone in your grieving, believing no one really understands.

How Consoling Parents can help

Begun in 1979 by the Norton Pastoral Care Department, Consoling Parents is a support group just for parents who, like you, have lost a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death. You can talk freely and confidentially about your experience - what helps and what hurts - or you can just listen to others. The group meets twice a month to hear, understand, accept and guide one another through the aftermath of loss.

Meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Beargrass Christian Church, Room 202, 4100 Shelbyville Road, Louisville, KY. For further information, call the Norton Pastoral Care Department at (502)629-2103.
