Empty Arms

A miscarriage, a stillbirth, a newborn death – such a sudden, unexpected event can be a heartbreaking experience for parents. Two parents involved in the Consoling Parents Support Group knew the pain of leaving the hospital with empty arms. They were the first sponsors and creators of the Empty Arms Bear project as a way to help provide comfort and absorb the tears, anger and frustration that come with the loss of a child. Many parents have sponsored bears for others since this effort began in October 2005.

This project is supported by families and friends who understand the pain of infant loss. As these parents work through their grief, it is our hope the Consoling Parents Support Group will be a source of comfort when they are ready to talk about their loss.

"A wife who loses a husband is called a widow,
A husband who loses a wife is called a widower.
A child who loses his parents is called an orphan,

Yet there is no word for a parent who loses a child,

That’s how awful the loss is.”
